Amiya Kumar Mazumdar, with ancestral gentry roots in Sendia, Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), was born on 29 November 1917 to parents Ranajit Kumar Mazumdar and Gouri Devi at ‘Kaviraj Bari’, Kolkata, the house of Mahamahopadhyaya Dwaraka Nath Sen, his maternal grandfather.

Amiya Kumar’s family in Faridpur was at the forefront of the nationalist politics. Amvika Charan Mazumdar, his grandfather, was elected the President, 31st Indian National Congress at Lucknow in 1916. Phani Bhushan Mazumdar, Amiya Kumar’s cousin was a cabinet member in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s government in 1972 in the newly formed independent Bangladesh.

In 1954, Amiya Kumar Mazumdar, the oldest among the siblings of four, married Archana Sengupta who hailed from an enlightened nationalist family of Gopalganj (now in Bangladesh). Archana, the life-long companion to Amiya Kumar, died few days after the demise of her husband; Amiya Kumar and Archana are survived by one daughter, a son and three grand children.
