In early childhood days, leaving Faridpur Amiya Kumar joined his father who was then the Law Officer, Calcutta Improvement Trust (now renamed as Kolkata Improvement Trust), at Kolkata.

In 1933, Amiya Kumar passed the Matriculation Examination with distinction from Rani Bhabani School and joined Scottish Church College, Kolkata. He graduated with honours in Philosophy with first class securing the first position in the University of Calcutta in 1937 and was awarded the Jubilee Scholarship. Amiya Kumar again stood first in first class in 1940 in the MA Examination in Philosophy of the University of Calcutta with specialisation in Vedanta Philosophy.

During his journey from matriculation to post-graduation, starting from Beni Madhab Das, his Head Master in school, Amiya Kumar was influenced by Dr W S Urquhart and Rev Allen Cameron, both principals of Scottish Church College; in MA classes, he was fortunate to have come in contact with Prof Surendranath Dasgupta, Prof Humayun Kabir and most importantly, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who, according to Amiya Kumar, was his mentor.
